What does “being authentic” really mean?

What exactly does it mean to be authentic?

At the core of each person is a single word.

This one word inside of you represents that what you value most, and it never changes throughout your life.

Consciously or not, you seek out experiences based on your one core value. The amount of joy or pain that you feel is directly connected to the level of closeness that you have with your core value, and this value must be present in each area of your life in order for you to feel fulfilled.

When you take a moment to pinpoint exactly what your core value is, you give yourself the opportunity to live on purpose. You begin to gravitate towards the people, places, and experiences that you want and need in order to fulfill your core value’s function. When you take on the task of defining what you stand for and then live your life connected to that foundation, you intentionally become an authentic person.

Evan Carmichael, author of Built to Serve and Your One Word, highlights the top 5 questions to ask yourself when discovering who you are at your authentic core:

  • Who was your favorite teacher and why?
  • What is your favorite movie of all time?
  • What do you love most about how your parents raised you?
  • Which successful person do you look up to & why?
  • What lessons do you want your kids to learn?

Try to come up with three words for each, and then circle what gets repeated. That is your authentic core value.

When you live your life from your core value, you become an authentic person. When you become authentic, people begin to trust you and understand what you stand for.

After our printed planner sold out at the end of February, I was still getting requests. It didn’t feel right to print more + sell them so late in the season, so I created a free digital version for you to enjoy.
